Choir Boy - review
One thing about me is I love a musical so as soon as the cover work for Choir Boy came up on my insta ads I immediately booked my £10 ticket!
I already knew I was in for a vocal treat when I saw the line up included such wonderful singers such as Michael Ahomka-Lindsay playing David who I'd seen sing at an event late last year; who's battling internal conflict between wanting to become a pastor and trying to keep his scholarship.
When they said "lift every voice and sing" they meant it! Those five boys sounded like a choir of 20 as they sang us into the new school year at the prestigious Charles R Drew Prep School for Boys.
Centre stage is Pharus, our lovable lead played by the charismatic Terique Jarrett who confidently takes us through the highs, lows and inbetweens of the school year. Moving from choir practice, yard duties, classrooms, dorm rooms and the school showers.
It is relayed to the audience pretty early on through the stern tone of headmaster Mr Pendleton played by Martin Turner that there is a very strict code of conduct to be a member of not only the school but also the choir. Oh and another thing is that Drew boys don't snitch!
A scene that really stood out to me and really highlighted the fragmented dynamic amongst the choir boys were the phone calls home. Firstly, it was beautifully choreographed and incredibly moving sequence the phone wires weren't present but I saw how entangled they all were trying to honour the expectations of their loved ones back home.
